A timeline of education

Confucius was the first teacher in China, born in 551 BCE to a noble family. He is renowned for establishing the art of teaching as a vocation. It was his mission to make education available to everyone. Like our teachers today, he loved to teach and would take on any pupil with a thirst for knowledge.

Plato is one of the world’s most famous philosophers alongside Socrates and Aristotle, his student. He was born around 427 BCE and spent many years inventing written forms of philosophy. Many people call him the founder of western political philosophy. He died in 348 BCE, passing on the baton to Aristotle.
